Key facts

Schengen Visa Basics

These follow the official EU rules for short-stay visas. Rules and fees can change, so confirm with the embassy or visa centre you apply through.

How long you can stay

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A Schengen visa is not for long stays, work or setting up a business.

Where to apply

At the country of your main destination (where you will spend the most time). If you cannot name a main destination, apply to the country where you first enter the Schengen area.

When to apply

No earlier than 6 months before your trip. It is advisable to apply at least 15 calendar days before, and earlier in busy seasons.

Fee

The standard fee is EUR 90 for adults, paid when you submit. It is not refunded if your application is refused. Visa centres may add a service charge.

Decision time

Normally within 15 calendar days of a complete application. It can take longer, so do not book non-refundable travel before you have your visa.

Travel insurance

Most applicants need travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover.

Choose the right country

Which Country Do I Apply To?

Apply to the country where you will spend the most time, not the one you think is easier. If your trip covers several countries with equal time in each, apply to the first one you will enter. Applying to the wrong country can cause delays or refusal.
Not in Schengen: Ireland and the UK are separate. See our Ireland visa page and UK visa page if your route includes them.

  • Travel itinerary and accommodation details
  • Travel medical insurance that meets the requirements
  • Evidence of enough money for your stay
  • Evidence of your purpose of travel (invitation, event registration, bookings)
  • Evidence of your ties and circumstances in Nigeria
